Unsupervised Classification of Acoustic Echoes from Two Krill Species in the Southern Ocean (Ross Sea)
2021
This work presents a computational methodology able to automatically classify the echoes of two krill species recorded in the Ross sea employing scientific echo-sounder at three different frequencies (38, 120 and 200 kHz). The goal of classifying the gregarious species represents a time-consuming task and is accomplished by using differences and/or thresholds estimated on the energy features of the insonified targets. Conversely, our methodology takes into account energy, morphological and depth features of echo data, acquired at different frequencies. Internal validation indices of clustering were used to verify the ability of the clustering in recognizing the correct number of species. Th…
Robust Network Agreement on Logical Information
2011
Abstract Logical consensus is an approach to distributed decision making which is based on the availability of a network of agents with incomplete system knowledge. The method requires the construction of a Boolean map which defines a dynamic system allowing the entire network to consent on a unique, global decision. Previous work by the authors proved the method to be viable for applications such as intrusion detection within a structured environment, when the agent's communication topology is known in advance. The current work aims at providing a fully distributed protocol, requiring no a priori knowledge of each agent's communication neighbors. The protocol allows the construction of a r…
Designing Cognitive Cities
2018
The following text intends to give an introduction into some of the basic ideas which determined the conception of this book. Thus, the first part of this article introduces the terms “City”, “Smart City” and “Cognitive City”. The second part gives an overview of design theories and approaches such as Action Design Research and Ontological Design (a concept in-the-making), in order to deduce from a theoretical point of view some of the principles that needs to be taken into account when designing the Cognitive City. The third part highlights some concrete techniques that can be usefully applied to the problem of citizen communication for Cognitive Cities (namely Metaheuristics, Fuzzy Sets a…
"The human use of human beings": Interdisciplinarity, transdisciplinarity and all that in biophysics and beyond.
2017
Abstract Biophysics, just by looking at its name, indicates an interdisciplinary scientific activity, although the notion of interdisciplinarity, as such, seems to be not widely or specifically discussed by biophysicists. The same seems to have happened as well in the early stages of the development of cybernetics, notably in Norbert Wiener's writings. This situation seems to contrast with what has happened in subsequent developments of cybernetics ideas, notably in general system theory and cognitive sciences. After a few general reflections on the notion of interdisciplinarity, its sophisticated variants and the path leading to the birth of cognitive science, we shall refer to Wiener's th…
The Logical Intelligence Enhancement Program (LIEP) for the improvement of cognitive abilities. Premilinary findings
2021
The Logical Intelligence Enhancement Program (LIEP) is a program specifically addressed to students aging from 6 to 12. It consists of a series of exercises of different types (verbal inferences, understanding of graphs and tables, series of digits, etc.) and increasing difficulty, properly devised to activate and train the abilities of logical reasoning. Hopefully, such an enhancement should result in an improvement of academic achievements, especially in low proficiency learner students. Here we report on a study carried out on a large cohort of fifth-grade students. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of LIEP in improving students’ cognitive abilities and abstract reasoning.
Free Action and Interventionist Theory of Causality
2019
Database Versioning 2.0, a Transparent SQL Approach Used in Quantitative Management and Decision Making
2015
Abstract Managerial decisions are based on accurate information and in today's time raw data is produced even with a stroke of a key. Regardless of the data creating process one needs to know how the information was extracted and which pool of data was used. One important factor is time therefore we need to structure it in layers of data history in such a way that it can be analyzed, (post)process, in order to be able to retrieve valuable information. The simplest way is to use a Database Management System (DBMS), but even with such a management system we face the issue of making it a self-contained database on each version of data added. Our proposed system, a continuation of previous work…

A chi si rivolgono le norme di diritto internazionale?
2023
In this chapter the traditional legal issues concerning the identification of the subjects of international law is examined according to an original perspective. First of all, the legal regimes of self-determination, minorities and national reconciliation processes are seen, as a whole; namely, as expressions of the increasing legal value of civil societies (peoples, groups) in international law. Second: the legal regime of State sovereignty is dealt with in this chapter, since sovereignty is considered as being the logical corollary of state international capacity. Third and most importantly: the legal position of individuals is not examined in general terms, but with specific regard to so…
